Life Box – A Silent Protest for Reproductive Rights

A visual installation that challenges perspectives on abortion rights and bodily autonomy. Using symbolic elements, Life Box confronts the emotional and ethical tensions surrounding reproductive freedom.

The Problem: The Debate Over Reproductive Rights

Abortion is a deeply divisive issue, shaped by legal, ethical, and societal perspectives. This mind map breaks down key arguments, statistics, and research to provide a clearer understanding of the debate. By mapping out both Pro-Life and Pro-Choice viewpoints, along with medical data and case studies, it reveals the complexities surrounding reproductive rights.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, stripped abortion of its constitutional protection, leaving access to state control. Many states imposed strict bans, disproportionately affecting low-income individuals with limited healthcare options. While pro-life advocates view abortion as taking a life, pro-choice supporters argue for bodily autonomy. With access increasingly restricted, the need for awareness and advocacy is more urgent than ever.

The Concept: Experience it

Life Box transforms the abortion debate into a physical experience. A balloon, representing a fetus, expands inside a rigid box—the uterus—until it reaches its limit. Stepping closer triggers a motorized blade, bursting the balloon and symbolizing how external forces ultimately dictate the outcome of a pregnancy.

The design reinforces this inevitability. The unyielding box mirrors bodily and legal restrictions, while the balloon’s gradual expansion builds tension. The passive trigger mechanism ensures the audience’s mere presence initiates the rupture, forcing them to confront their role as both observer and participant.

Every element—form, material, and interaction—was chosen to strip away personal choice and emphasize control.
